7.3 magnitude earthquake hits near Sumatra
(CNN) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck off the western coast of northern Sumatra, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake hit at 12:37 a.m. Wednesday (1:37 p.m. Tuesday ET) on the island in western Indonesia.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake happened at a depth of 18.1 miles about 262 miles southwest of Banda Aceh, Sumatra, and 590 miles west of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
There is no widespread tsunami threat, but a local threat is possible, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.
